The story of the day
Monday did not try to impress anyone. After Sunday's 20-mile long run, Matthew Brunken jogged 1.56 miles in Lincoln in about fifteen minutes at a relaxed 9:46/mi. That is the correct kind of boring.
Marathon builds fail in the 24 hours after the long run as often as they fail on the long run itself. The temptation is to "stay consistent" with another honest session. The smarter move is circulation without cost.
Why this still counts
On the road to CIM in December 2026, recovery is not a gap in the story — it is a chapter. The same is true for the Garmin Kansas City Half checkpoint later in the season. You cannot race either event on legs that never got permission to settle.
A short outdoor loop keeps the habit alive, loosens residual stiffness, and gives the diary something true to say: he showed up, and he stopped.
Details from the log
- Single session, easy classification on Runalyze
- Outdoor Lincoln running (not treadmill)
- Pace well slower than Sunday's long-run average — as it should be
Coaching takeaway
Teach athletes a rule they can repeat: the day after a landmark long run is allowed to look small. If ego needs a win, make the win "I recovered on purpose."
Looking ahead
Volume can climb again once the legs feel springy rather than swampy. The CIM block rewards patience stacked over months, not heroics stacked over 48 hours.
