The story of the day

Not every diary entry needs fireworks. Saturday's work was a single treadmill run: 3.11 miles in 24:55 at an even 8:00 per mile. Easy classification, clean execution, no negotiation with the weather.

In a week that already included a 20-mile long run and a multi-session treadmill day with sharper middle miles, this is how you close the loop without reopening fatigue.

Season thread

Matthew Brunken's north star remains the California International Marathon in December 2026. The Garmin Kansas City Half Marathon is the nearer measuring stick. Days like this do not show up on highlight reels, but they keep weekly rhythm intact — the same rhythm that turns autumn half-marathon fitness into winter marathon durability.

What "maintenance" means in practice

  • Pace stays conversational relative to recent quality
  • Duration is long enough to count, short enough to recover
  • The session ends with the option to train tomorrow

That last point is the real metric. Marathon training is a streak of options preserved.

Coaching takeaway

Athletes hunting CIM or any fall/winter marathon should practice publishing the small days too. A public diary that only celebrates twenties teaches the wrong lesson. Consistency is the brand — for the athlete and for the site.

Looking ahead

The next long-run cycle will ask for patience again. Until then, stack easy miles, protect sleep, and keep the story honest. The road to Sacramento is built one logged day at a time; Kansas City will get its say first.
