Why strides belong in base

Strides are not workouts pretending to be something else. They are short, controlled accelerations that keep mechanics honest while aerobic volume does the heavy lifting.

Today's structure:

  1. Easy aerobic run
  2. 4–6 short strides with full recovery
  3. Simple strength circuit focused on hips, calves, and trunk

Execution

The easy portion stayed true easy. Strides opened gradually — tall posture, quick feet, no sprint face. Full walking recoveries between reps. Strength stayed moderate; the goal is resilience, not soreness that steals tomorrow's miles.

What I watched for

  • Footstrike staying under the body
  • Arms swinging without twisting the torso
  • Breathing settling within a minute after each stride

Coaching takeaway

If strides turn into all-out sprints, you missed the point. Teach athletes to feel fast and relaxed, then stop. The training log should show discipline, not a highlight reel.

Carry into the week

Keep cumulative fatigue visible. If legs feel heavy two days running, protect the next easy day harder than you protect the quality day.
